Mission: Possible

Mission: Possible

Here at Asbury Church, we are taking the month of February to put our focus on completing community service projects, and we call it “GoNow.”  Our hope is that it gets people involved, with the goal that people not only take action during the actual month of service, but all year long. We call this missional living, that is, going on a missions trip without having to leave home. In this year that Asbury Church turns 40, it’s still at the heart of who we are.

We engage the community in relationships where Christ can transform. That’s THE mission. The mission of Jesus is to extend God’s family, and He gave that mission to us too. We do that best when being missional becomes our lifestyle so that wherever we go (at home, work, school, ball game, wherever) the mission is there also.

It may mean as a family, when your child is at the soccer game, they are on point as the primary missionary whom the family is rallying around. Or at a community group service project, the kids accompany a parent who is the missionary on point this time and they rally around them. It’s missional living—extending God’s family and God’s kingdom in tangible ways where we do life every day.

So GoNow is close to our hearts. There are so many people in our local community that fall short of, or are without basic human needs: food, shelter and clothing. It helps that there are great organizations in our area that do help provide some of these basic needs. But these organizations cannot do it alone. We need your help and it’s easy to get involved, whether you give of your time, energy and expertise or provide financial support, your effort matters.

Did you know that more than 61 million Americans volunteer to improve conditions for people in need and to unselfishly give of themselves? On the flip-side, according to helpguide.org, volunteering “can help you reduce stress, find friends, connect with the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career.”  While the motivation is unselfish, it is gratifying to learn that the efforts of volunteers are returning considerable health benefits. Not only does living missionally extend God’s family and grow God’s Kingdom, it does your body good! And once February is over, we urge you to continue to think about our community and find ways in which you can be an ongoing missionary. Asbury Church will continue to provide opportunities throughout the year for you to get involved, within the church and the community.

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

Matthew 25:40

Dear Jesus,
Help me to spread Your fragrance wherever I go.
Flood my soul with Your Spirit and life.
Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly,
that my life may only be a radiance of Yours.
Shine through me, and be so in me
that every soul I come in contact with
may feel Your presence in my soul.
Let them look up, and see no longer me, but only Jesus!
Stay with me and then I will begin to shine as You shine,
so to shine as to be a light to others.
The light, O Jesus, will be all from You; none of it will be mine.
It will be You, shining on others through me.
Let me thus praise You in the way which You love best,
by shining on those around me.
Let me preach You without preaching, not by words but by my example,
by the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what I do,
the evident fullness of the love my heart bears to You.
Amen.
