THIS SUNDAY @ ASBURY – Communion
Sermon Preview: “Got to be Starting Something…”
Tom Newman, Lead Pastor
Something is up. Someone has started something and I’m not sure it is good. Sometimes I wonder if we’re all being distracted from something much bigger. It’s 2017. Most sane and rational people wonder how there can still be any kind of supremacy group, let alone Skin Head, Neo-Nazi or just plain KKK descended white supremacists. I feel dragged back decades to revisit old, dead issues. You can rest assured that I won’t hate anyone and when I dislike someone it will be for a far more important reason than the color of their skin! As I have wondered and prayed with other Christ followers, life has continued. School has started. We experienced an eclipse. Friendships have been forged and loved ones have “out run us to The Father’s House.” I’m thinking it is time to stop reacting. It’s time to start something of our own…something holy and righteous and life giving. This week we are reading Matthew 16:13-20 where Peter makes a powerful declaration. Jesus used Peter’s words to start something of God…the Church. Jesus started a movement, not a monument and we are called to be an active part of God’s movement in our world. Rather than fight for or against a monument, I want to start something God honoring and life affirming. Don’t you? Worship with us this Sunday and we’ll explore what God might be starting among us and how we can be a part of what God is starting. Be sure to invite the people you know and care about…they’ll be glad you did!

Our GroupLink being held on Sunday, September 10 will be at 10:30 AM in our Courtyard. The time of the event was intentionally scheduled so that everyone from both services may attend and have an equal opportunity to sign up for a LifeGroup. We have lots of new groups and leaders and the listing of all available LifeGroups can be found here. We are also excited to have two fall short-term studies held this year. One is being led by our very own Pastor Tom Newman, and will tackle a question we all ask sometimes – why do bad things happen to good people? You will also find that our Women’s Monday Night Study will be returning with a 10-week study of “The Patriarch’s.” Be sure to click on the link to see what groups you can sign up for!
