Sermon Preview: “‘No’ Isn’t a Bad Word”
Matthew 21:23-32
Tom Newman, Lead Pastor

No“NO!” It isn’t a word we want to hear. Toddlers learn the power of “NO!” early in life, much to the consternation of their parents. As parents we learn to say “NO!” more often than we’d like and, much to the surprise of our children, we find it hurts us every time. The thing is, we’d much rather say “yes.” We are natured to be pleasers and to give permission. Then, there comes those times when “no” is the only loving or faithful response. Where are you saying “no” today? This week we will read Matthew 21:23-32 and explore where Jesus said “no” and to whom and why. He told a quirky story that just might have a powerful meaning for each of us where we live. In a world where we hear “no” so often and even have to deal with the controversy of football players’ “no” to standing for our national symbol, what makes “no” healthy and how might even a strong and healthy “no” empower a much better “yes” for us? Be sure to worship this weekend and we’ll find out together. Make sure you bring friends, neighbors and acquaintances too…they’ll be glad you did!
